Napoleon Crossing the Alps (also known as Napoleon at the Saint-Bernard Pass or Bonaparte Crossing the Alps) is the title given to five versions of an equestrian portrait in oil on canvas painted by the French artist Jacques-Louis David, originally commissioned by the Spanish ambassador to France. Like the paintings, this bronze shows an idealized view of the actual crossing that Napoleon's army made through the Saint-Bernard Pass in 1800, which allowed the French to surprise the Austrian army and win the victory at the Battle of Marengo in June 1800.
As in David's paintings, this bronze references Hannibal, the great Carthaginian general who marched through the Italian peninsula during the Second Punic War and achieved a victory.
